Intro to Email class 4/30

I'm starting to see a trend. This is the THIRD computer class in a row that has had zero attendance. I think we should lay off for a while.

Sunday Night at the Opera

We had about 190 people at the annual opera program on Sunday night. The soprano hit some notes that would knock your socks off. The replacement tenor was excellent.

Consumer Reports on Mattresses

FYI

The June 2005 issue of Consumer Reports has a lead article on mattresses. This is a big relief since we get a lot of requests for this subject and Consumer Reports has not updated their report on mattresses for years!

Standard & Poors

I checked #5, but it doesn't have the S&P bookmark that Kris said she put on it. Have bookmarks been erased?
We need shortcuts installed on all computers to take advantage of netadvantage!

Ebsco and NetAdvantage icons

Hi. All the public internet computers in the reference area now have working icons on the desktop to get directly to EBSCO and to S&P's NetAdvantage. The NetAdvantage icon is on the right side of the screen half way up (or half way down, depending on your viewpoint).

I also fixed the bookmarks and favorites for all five computers so they now work for EBSCO. I added a bookmark for NetAdvantage , too. All browsers on all the computers have the bookmarks.

What does not work is clicking on EBSCO on the library website; because it is designed for home use, it asks for a library card number. Aaron will be figuring out how to create a webpage for in library that won't do this.

I think I tested all the changes. Let me know if anything with the icons or bookmarks does not work.

making changes to computers

You might recall that the security on our computers, DeepFreeze, stops any changes made from being permanent. If there is a change you'd like to make permanent, you'll have to disable the software. Here is the procedure:

1. Hold the 'Shift' key and double-click the blue and white icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
2. Enter the password for DeepFreeze (found in the red "Computers" binder).
3. Select "Thaw after reboot."
4. Reboot the machine.
5. When the computer comes to, make your changes. Note that if it is a major change, you might have to enter into the administrative mode to make them.
6. Once you have made your changes, reboot the computer.
7. When the computer comes to again, see if your changes are still there.

These instructions, along with the password, can be found in said red binder.

Program 5/12

There were 16 people for Peter Nepstad's program, including me for about 70% of it.

update on "mom"

Richard S. was in for some more information last night. He then later called to tell me to tell everyone that his mother is "going to Harvard." Then he hung up the phone.

Rick,

What meetings have you attended?

Adult Services Staff,

I am writing the monthly report now, so please let me know any meetings or workshops that you attended in May.

Rick

a minor note

To Magazines Staff:

I rerouted the cord for your keyboard today. I noticed that it was going form the tray, across the desk, and down the grommet. This should give you a cleaner workspace. If anyone uses the keyboard on the desk, it can still be placed up there.

Hope this helps.

Aaron

S&P Cards

There are some cards instructing people how to access S&P from home on the wood card holder at Reference. I will place more of them throughout the library.

The microfilm machine is making a noise when printing. The company has been called to service. Patrons can use the machine to view but should not make copies till seen by the repairman.

Thanks.

Appropriate Prize for Summer Sleuths

Bonnie Hilton pledged us 10 pairs of tickets to the Theater of Western springs for the matinee performance for September 17. What really fits well is that the play is "I'll Be Back Before Midnight," a four character suspense somewhat like Agatha Christi or Alfred Hitchcock! What luck!

Microfilm Machine

The microfilm machine is now working and patrons may use it.

Farmers Market list in file by desk

Julie brought in a list of farmers markets that ran in the Chicago Sun-Times Wednesday, May 25. We put it in the file named "In the News" at the reference desk.

Also in that file are ways to say "Merry Christmas" in many languages, a guide to MP3 players, and a list of words of the century (20th).

National Geographic Magazines

The 2003 and 2004 issues of National Geographic have returned from the bindery. They have been processed and are now on the shelves with the other bound National Geographics.

Interesting Day

I have seen many people I have not seen before today. Three of them have asked whether I could check out their books to them at the Reference Desk. I have been bumping people from the Internet stations all day.

I put temporary numbers on computers 4 and 5. The frame is narrow. We'll have to think about how to number them.
