Magazine Deletion

The magazine desk is starting magazine deletion. Carolyn has started in Youth Services and then we will go to Young Adults. We probably will not start Adults till July since we are shorthanded. Magazines that are deleted will have the barcodes blacked out. Patrons are free to take deleted issues which will be stored along the west wall in adults. If anyone has any brown grocery bags you can drop them off at the magazine desk. Thanks!

Tuesday,June 7th

Carolyn will be working the magazine desk on Tuesday from 1:30 pm till 4:30 pm. There will be no coverage for magazines after 4:30 pm.

School quilt coming to Thomas Ford

On June 20, Heather Alderman from Field Park Elementary will be bringing the quilt that the Field Park Fifth Graders made during the school year to the Library to hang on the stairwell down to the youth services department. It will remain in the Library through July 4 and then go to other locations in Western Springs during the summer before returning to its permanent home at Field Park.

Margery Cosgrove will take down her quilt before or on the 20th and then return with another quilt July 5.

Nancy's Triumph

Nancy was able to get the address of the old Sahara Hotel near O'Hare where the Beatles stayed on their 1964 tour by email from the archives of Mobile Travel Guide! The patron was very pleased.

I have been so pleased with the service you and the library provide. Thanks for going the extra mile.

Alan

Good work!

Interesting request

John Myhre is going to Norway next week and is looking for an identifiable Thomas Ford item to hold while having his photo taken. I have thought of the Western Springs Library Friends book bag. Does anyone have any other ideas?

We will have to ask him to let us use the photo on our webpage.

Follow-up to the below message

This request of Mr. Myhre's has sparked an idea. When I lived in Indianapolis, a grocery store had a promotional program where you would get a free loaf of bread if you brought in a photo of yourself on vacation holding an O'Malia's grocery bag. The photos were posted on a bulletin board. (I think they're still doing it -- I went back 15 years later and the photo of me on the Great Wall was still there!)
So, we're looking for ideas around this theme. What could we call the program? (One idea -- Travels with Thommy) What would the photographed item be? (One idea -- a bookmark that says "Travels with Thommy") What would the prize be? (One idea -- a free DVD rental)
Surely you can come up with something even better than this! There is some urgency: Mr. Myhre's trip to Norway, and mine to China.

Cook County Taxpayer Exemption Booklet

We just received a stack of 2004 Cook County Taxpayer Exemption Booklets, which say that the deadline for filing is April 27, 2005. I called the Assessor's office and learned the deadline was extended to Tuesday, June 21. That is not much time.

I placed the stack by the summer reading box behind the reference desk.

Followup on photos from distant lands

Anne and I had the idea of creating a poster with the image of Thomas Ford from above the fireplace, and Aaron created it. We gave a copy to John Myhre to take to Norway and Aaron said he would take one to Calgary.

We have not thought of a reward for bringing us a photo. Perhaps just getting on the website. Any ideas?

Western Springs Houses are now also on a State Website

Alyce at the Illinois State Library has published our Western Springs Houses project info at http://www.eliillinois.org:8080/cgi-bin/browseresults.exe?CISOROOT=%2Ftfm
which does not seem to actaully be the Illinois Digital Archives, which the ISL is redesigning.

collection update

One the pamphlet file cabinets is now in Kris' office. This didn't leave enough room for the Cliffs Notes, so I moved them to where the oversized nonfiction used to be housed. The oversized NF is now shelved underneath the atlases.

There's nothing in the other cabinet by Reference 4 and 5, so try to think of something we could put in that space (once we move the cabinet downstairs).

Reference 4 & 5

Speaking of those ol' computers, the local printers should be working on them now.

The default printer on them, however, is the Big One up front.

Illinois Compiled Statutes

We have a new set of the Illinois Complied Statatues in reference. The call is R 348 ILL.

This set includes legislation through December 31, 2004. This set is quite up to date at the moment, as no legislation was passed in 2005 until late May. Should you need to see 2005 Public Laws, go to http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs.asp . There is a keyword seach box on the left. There is also a link for Public Acts in the short paragraph near the top of the page.

deletions

Rick,

I just freed up some space by deleting 10 18 500s.

collection update question

Referring to "collection update" below, where are the things that were still in the pamphlet file, in particular the Western Springs and Illinois stuff?
