Most of the phone books have been updated

Thanks to whoever got the new phonebooks onto the index table. I used a new phonebook this morning. I am hoping 12 more will come.

Also I would appreciate any brown paper grocery bags that you may have at home for recycling the magazines!

King's English booklists

I just read a good book about the King's English, a bookstore in Salt Lake City, which includes some booklists that might help with readers' advisory. Fiction, mysteries, poetry, and westerns are included and broken down into some sublists, like "25 Slight in Size, Sometimes Wicked, But Funny." I have copied the pages and am giving them to Nancy to fit into our "best books" notebook.

Obituary Shortcut from COD

I was able to find an obituary for Catholic Charities from the 1974 Chicago Tribune quickly by using the Historical Chicago Tribune database on the College of DuPage website. The address is www.cod.edu. Click on the library link. Use my COD library card number to get into the database.

I found the obit on a PDF page which was not very clear, so I did then go to our microfilm which was to make a copy for faxing.

Haines Criss Cross

I have cancelled the Chicago Illinois West volume of the Haines Criss Cross for 2006, but I have retained the Chicago Illinois Near West volume, which includes Western Springs, Hinsdale, Oak Brook, La Grange, etc.

When the delivery comes in late July or August there will be only one volume. As always, they are supposed to take the old volumes (a lease) but they probably will just leave them, as they have for years.

Cook County Consolidated Community Development Plan

The County hand delivered a copy of County Consolidated Community Development Plan 2005-2009 and asked that we have it available for the next 30 days. I have put it beside the Timber Trails notebooks at the reference desk.

Thomas Ford Department Heads Meeting, July 7, 2005

Anne reported that the Library has submitted two grants to the Illinois State Library. The first is a Weed-n-Feed grant for funds to buy science and technology books. The second is Bring Teens Back on Their Own Terms, a request for $150,000 for 21 libraries and the Metropolitan Library System to fund a gaming tournament program. Whether the grants are funded will be announced in September or October.

The wireless disclaimer is working. It appears on the laptops of wireless Internet users in our building. They have to click to agree to our policies.

We received our 2005 Per Capita Grant of $15,600. The application for the 2006 has arrived and is due October 15. It requires an evaluation of the facility and a review of the trustee handbook.

Anne said that she and the board are reviewing the emergency policy. Aaron and Nancy are weeding the 300s and 500s. John is weeding YA audiobooks.

Beth reported that we have a very hardworking group of pages. Shannon wants to have another shelf reading in youth services after the summer reading program is finished.

The next meeting will be Thursday, August 4.

Sunset Magazine

FYI
Sunset magazine will now be in the adult reading room in a binder instead of behind the circulation desk. If there are problems with it being stolen or pages ripped out please let me know.

July 26, 2005

mystery table (table of mystery book)

Just a quick note to mention that the books seem to be circulating quite well there. I've replaced 5 today and plenty of them in the weeks past.

Concept Mapping

Here's something I saw at the ALA Conference that I'd never seen before: concept mapping. Go to the Lexington, KY Public Library's web site and play with it for awhile -- it's neat!

Haines Criss-Cross

Mr. Webb from Haines just left with the large Chicago West volume tucked under his arm.

Reference printer

Is there an owners' manual for the 1320 printer at Reference? I don't know all the buttons and gizmos, and when something goes wrong I'm afraid I'll break something. Could we keep the manual in an obvious place nearby?

Wall Street Journal

Friday's (7/29/05) Wall Street Journal is missing if anybody is looking for it. Also starting on September 17th, the Wall Street Journal will be publishing a saturday edition.
