SRP Info

General SRP 2006 information is now available on the kids pages. Our brochure won't be available until next Fri, so please use the info on the web to get patrons started.

Registration starts June 5 and is in-person at the Library. Events and activities start the 12th and run for an 8 week session, no general weekly programs the week of July 4.

YS will be doing rounds at schools for the next few weeks and we will be in and out as we are doing 2-3 perfromances at each school. A flyer will be sent home with kids so parents have some basic info.

We really need more volunteers than ever this summer so please spread the word to kids entering seventh grade and above.

Should be a fun summer!

Game Night

Hi,

There is going to be a game night on the 13th of May from 7:00 til 9:00ish. Just wanted everyone to know in case some confused teenager askes about it. Thanks!

Reference Desk Makeover

Everyone,

I rearranged the reference desk a little, as you may have already seen. I was reading about readers advisory and looking like we recommend books, so I thought I would try surrounding us with books to give the impression that we like books. Feel free to bring the books you want to hang with to the desk. The idea is to get books into the hands of readers. Let me know what you think.

Ordering Journal Articles

FYI
If you are ordering journal articles from First Search or another source, the magazine desk needs to get a copy of the request so that when the magazine article comes in we know who it goes to. We also have to keep track of articles for statistics and copyright purposes.

Thank you!

Need legal forms?

If you get a request for legal forms that you do not easily find, refer them to me, as I can get into the Thomason Gale Legal Forms database with my Downers Grove library card.

Housekeeping

In YS:
1- I thought I would let everyone know our jammin new hand vaccum is availble to clean up any messes that you might encounter. It is on the jack beside our little radio and please feel free to use it as you desire.
2- We are currently moving ref, bios, and then J Fiction. Pardon the mess as the shift may take a little bit more to complete. Ref has been weeded and is now where the magazines were once located. Shan

Help!

I am creating a bookmark for our adult summer reading program, of staff favorite biographies and memoirs. I need another 5 or 6 titles to fill it up! If you've read a good one lately, please give me the title. (This is excluding the ones turned in by some of you a couple of months ago -- I've already included those.) Thanks!

Big Read Wrap Up

The eight libraries of the Big Read met at the Downers Grove Public Library on May 15 to complete the year’s program and look toward 2007.

The last task we had was selecting a winner of prizes from the participants who completed evaluations. After that was done we discussed the year. The main disappointment was that the book discussions were poorly attended; we think there had already been too many discussions of the book before the program. We vowed to try to a fiction title (or author) that is discussable for next year. We also would like to have the author, as that was the top event of the 2005 program.

We chose Debbie Wordinger of Indian Prairie as the leader for next year’s program.

Debbie has already started the effort, sending out book consideration forms to the members of the committee. We have also had an email conversation about the national grant program from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. We canned the idea of applying because we had to go for so much money ($10,000) and match it with local funds, plus there would be so much red tape.

I am encouraged that the conversation for next year has started. It will be interesting to see what gets done over summer.
