The eight libraries of the Big Read met at the Downers Grove Public Library on May 15 to complete the year’s program and look toward 2007.
The last task we had was selecting a winner of prizes from the participants who completed evaluations. After that was done we discussed the year. The main disappointment was that the book discussions were poorly attended; we think there had already been too many discussions of the book before the program. We vowed to try to a fiction title (or author) that is discussable for next year. We also would like to have the author, as that was the top event of the 2005 program.
We chose Debbie Wordinger of Indian Prairie as the leader for next year’s program.
Debbie has already started the effort, sending out book consideration forms to the members of the committee. We have also had an email conversation about the national grant program from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. We canned the idea of applying because we had to go for so much money ($10,000) and match it with local funds, plus there would be so much red tape.
I am encouraged that the conversation for next year has started. It will be interesting to see what gets done over summer.
