Department Head notes from October 5, 2006

Anne asked us for summer reading statistics for a report to the Board.

She also reported on completion of the application for next year’s per capita grants. We plan to spend the 2007 grant for the following:

Materials in special formats, such as large print, audiobooks, cds (music) and dvds
Additions to the adult fiction collection, especially mysteries and new fiction
Nonfiction for young adults
Audiovisual materials for children
The annual staff in-service day

Anne reports that we were awarded a grant of $4500 for developing a library strategic plan. Consultant Jenna Hendricks (sp?) will help the staff and board make a plan to get the library where it wants to be ten years from now.

This year’s staff in-service day is Friday, October 27. We will start at 8:30 with coffee and sweet rolls. The program will last from 9:00 to noon. We will have an hour for lunch and then department meetings will follow.

Julie reported that business magazines have been disappearing form the reading room. She will be putting up a sign stating that they are available for loan when the next issue arrives.

More calendar notes. We will be closed Friday, December 8 for our end of the year in-service. Christmas holidays are December 24, 25, and 26. New Years are December 31 and January 1 and 2. We will close at 5:00 on Wednesday, November 22 for Thanksgiving

New Baker and Taylor Agreement

MLS sent out the new Baker and Taylor agreement information a couple of days ago. Here are the new discounts:

Music CDs - 15% (for items up to $14.99 list price)
- 25% (for items $15 to 24.99)
- 30% (for items over $30)

DVDs - 26.1%

Games - 10%

Adult Trade Hardcover books - 43.5%

Juvenile Trade Hardcover - 43.5%

Adult and Juvenile Quality Paperbacks - 40%

Mass Market Paperbacks - 40%

Single edition reinforced (Juvenile) - 35%

Publisher's Library editions (Juvenile) - 18.5%

University Press Trade Editions - 10%

Textbooks, reference, technical, small press, and limited demand books - 0% or 5%

The graduated discounts on the music CDs result in a list price $14.99 CD costing us $12.74 and a list price $15.99 CD costing us $11.99, according to my calculations.

Google Calendar

Hi all,
I took the frames off the calendar page online. Now the calendar's bigger and easier to read.
http://www.fordlibrary.org/calendar
I also changed the name from TFML=>Thomas Ford Memorial Library Calendar

Should I say something about contacting the reference desk to reserve a room?

I also synched the old calendar with the new (Google), adding items for Oct., Nov., Dec., and Jan.

There's one conflict. Next Tuesday, People to People are meeting in the boardroom from 5-8 pm. The foundation is supposed to meet in there 7-8:30pm.

Also, I changed the time settings from military time to normal (a '"p" to represent pm is automatically inserted). I made the entries consistent and edited a few entries' names so that an important word was visible (since the words don't wrap). Otherwise you would have to click through to understand what the item is. E.g., monthly table craft=>table craft; Thomas Ford Library Foundation meeting=>Foundation meeting.

Reference shelf reorganized for McClure books

We have received copies of the McClure textbooks, which will be kept behind the adult Reference Desk. The stickers on the spines refer to the grade level (6, 7 or 8). These books are not to be removed from the library, but will be signed out for use within the library. There are sign-out sheets in a clip binder next to the books, which explain the form of ID needed to sign out the items.

In order to make room on the shelves, Rick and I moved some things. Most things are still on the shelves but have been relocated to the right or left, with the following exceptions:

-- We are no longer keeping 11x17 copy paper back here. It will be kept at the Circ Desk or downstairs.
-- The Sanborn Map microfilm and copies (blue box) are now in the pamphlet file with the other Western Springs information.
-- The smaller (and newer) copy of the Chicago area maps book is now on the reference shelf at 912.773.
-- The recent library journals are in the same place, but in Princeton files instead of laying flat in a tray.

I think that's all!

Adult Services Meeting of October 11, 2006

Here is a little summary:

We discussed the opening for teen librarian. We now have six applications. I
will do interviews in early November. We are accepting applications until
October 27.

The IPod project is going along, though we have had a free machiner for several
days now. I did statistics and realized our stats are short. Some of the books
I have loaded 2 or 3 times show no checkouts on SWAN. We will work harder to
see that both the IPod and the books get checked out.

The new Konica Minolta printer/copier is now working again. I have now gotten
most of the staff computers connected. A trainer is coming on Friday, October
13 to meet with me, and he will return on October 27 (In Service Day) to work
with everyone.

I need copy for the newsletter by the end of the month.

Nancy urged that we start creating booklists again. That would be good as we
want new content for the website redesign.

Kris is planning to have her writing programs only in the fall in 2007.

Julie has reported that a number of magazines have disappeared from the Reading
Room in the past several months.

I am working on the master password list.

Consumer Reports on Furnaces

I have had 4 people come in requesting Consumer Reports articles on furnaces this month. So I copied the most recent articles and put it in a clip binder next to the consumer information. This way if someone else comes in they can read it or copy themselves to use.

Hanging file folders

As a result of cleaning out the former pamphlet file, we have tons of empty legal-sized hanging file folders. These are too large for most of the file drawers in use at the library. Although we want to hold onto a few of them for this cabinet and a cabinet in Youth Services, we will not need most of them.

If you know of an organization who could use them, or if you'd like a few personally, tell the Reference staff.

By the way, we are discussing ways to use the two remaining drawers in this cabinet. If you have a good idea, tell Rick.

Books on iPod

Do we have a list of the iPod books that we can show (or give) to patrons? I know I did a categorization of them for Rick, but don't know whether a list for the public was generated from it.

Junk

There is a bunch of junk mail in the comments on this site, dating back to June. Should we be concerned about this?
