This summer it's all about the amazing planet that we inhabit with our theme of Earth Rocks @ the Library. Our Earth is an amazing place of varied ecosystems, geography and natural wonders. Get ready to go exploring with our theme that will foster an appreciation for Earth's resources and encourage sustainability in a fun way. A full brochure with all the details will be available in our Department by mid-May.
Registration for all summer events will begin on June 9, in-person at the Library. All programs require registration; to register, you must have a valid Library card. Weekly programs, storytimes, and events all begin on June 16th and will run for an eight-week session through August 8th. The last day to report on books and receive prizes will be August 11th.
Beginning June 9th, kids can join one of four reading groups: Arctic Explorers (read-to-me), Mountain Climbers (beginning readers), Rainforest Readers (jr. chapter books) or Savanna Stars (novel length). Infants and toddlers can join our Pebble Readers and earn prizes appropriate to their age.
This year our prizes will include fair trade chocolate, crayons, books, jump ropes and other prizes that are safe, biodegradable, and eco-friendly. Our Pebble Readers program will feature handmade giveaways such as canvas totes, organic snuggle dolls, cloth memory match games, repurposed fabric pants and more from individual Etsy sellers.
A highlight of our program will be the planting table sponsored by the Western Springs Garden Club. One prize will allow a child to enjoy decorating a peat pot and then preparing a special plant to take home. Other perks include prizes of coupons such as ice cream at Snackers, pizza from Lou Malnati’s Pizza, or DuPage Children’s Museum Tickets. Extra weekly drawing prizes will include tickets to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cernan Space Center, and SciTech Hands On Museum of Aurora. Take your young players to local sports teams like the DuPage Dragons and the Windy City Thunderbolts. Stay tuned for more details as our program progresses. Our finale pizza party will be held at Enchanted Castle on August 14th.
Look for exciting activities all summer long such as a prize and contest table, plant displays, our Monday Movies series, Friday craft tables, performers, and a science-themed workshop series.
We would like to take a moment to say THANK YOU to the generous sponsors and supporters of our program. Without their support our program could not be a success.

We'd like to extend a warm welcome to our newest full time staffer in the Children's Department. Uma Nori joins our staff after working several years at the Lisle Public Library District. She holds an MLIS from Dominican University, a MS in Life and Plant Sciences from the University of Hyderabad in India, and a BS in Chemistry, Botany and Zoology from Bangalore University in India. Her experience in libraries is extensive, she is an accomplished oral storyteller, and she has a tremendous body of knowledge about children's literature. We think that you'll just love her friendly smile and enthusiasm with children. Welcome to our team!
Simple Stories is a casual drop-in event. Every day Monday-Friday we will read a story or two on our new beautiful stage. Experience the joy of the spoken word as we select a new title every day for kids to hear. This is just simply a story, so gather round to listen.
