Summer Reading for Everyone

Thomas Ford has three summer reading programs for 2009. Everyone may join us in reading great books.

Be Creative @ Your Library
Summer Reading for Children

This summer the Thomas Ford Memorial Library encourages all children to Be Creative @ Your Library. Join the Youth Services Summer Reading Club to earn prizes and enjoy crafts, performers and events. The Summer Reading Club runs from June 8 to August 7.

Signup for the Summer Reading Club begins Monday, June 8.

Program registration, contests and prize distribution begin Monday, June 15.

Be Creative @ Your Library ends with a pizza party and prize drawings at Enchanted Castle in Lombard on Friday, August 7. Invitations will be available once you meet the final goal. In addition to earning prizes for reading, there will be programs to bring out your child's artistic side. Children must be signed up for the Summer Reading Club to participate in any of the programs.

Express Yourself @ Your Library
Summer reading for Teens

Teens finishing grades 6-12 can join TFML's Teen Summer Reading Challenge: Express Yourself @ Your Library. Read for ten or more hours between June 8 and August 7 in order to qualify for two gift drawings: a pizza party at The Spaghetti Bowl or a Flip Video Camera. The more you read, the more entries you'll earn. All teens who complete the challenge will have a book added to the library's collection in their honor, marked with a special book plate. Sign up during the first week to get an additional prize too! Don't know what to read? Check out our lists of books for fun and interesting non-required reads. Ask at the Reference Desk for more information or to sign up.

Glory Days: Coming-of-Age Stories
Summer Reading for Adults

Glory Days Remember those exhilarating adolescent years? The social awkwardness and selfconsciousness, the shy crushes, your first formal dance, the thrilling independence of a driver's license? As Bruce Springsteen says, those "glory days, well, they'll pass you by," but you can still enjoy reading about them!

For the 2009 Adult Summer Reading Program, Glory Days, the library will have displays and booklists featuring both fiction and nonfiction coming-of-age stories for you to choose from-sometimes funny, sometimes poignant tales and memoirs about characters transitioning into adulthood or discovering who they really are.

Here's how it works: Sign up beginning on Monday, June 8, then read six books or audio books from the library, including one coming-of-age story - all books are your choice. Record them in your reading log and bring your log to the Reference Desk to receive a ticket for each book you've read, to be entered in the weekly drawings that begin on June 15. Tickets remain in the drawing all summer, so report your books as soon as you finish them to increase your opportunities to win! After you have read all six books, turn in your log for an additional 6 bonus tickets. You can also earn an extra ticket every time you fill out a form for the Western Springs Reads collection of reviews by patrons, available at the Reference Desk. All tickets submitted by Friday, August 7 will be in the final drawing for the Grand Prizes. Prizes will include gift certificates from Borders and Vie Restaurant, a basket of books, and tickets to the Theater of Western Springs.
