Head of Circulation

We are looking for a friendly, organized leader to head our Circulation Department. As a key member of our Management Team, you’ll help shape the way our community interacts with the library every day. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Library Director.

What You’ll Do

You’ll be the heart of our front-desk operations, ensuring every visitor feels welcome and every book find its way home.

  • Lead & Inspire: Recruit, train, and mentor our circulation staff to provide top-notch service.
  • Connect with the Community: Help patrons with their questions, resolve concerns with a smile, and recommend their next favorite read.
  • Keep Things Running Smoothly: Manage day-to-day desk operations, oversee Interlibrary Loans (ILL), and keep our circulation manuals up to date.
  • Stay Ahead of the Curve: Keep an eye on new library trends and technology, sharing your insights with the rest of the management team.
  • Be a Team Player: Collaborate on library-wide projects, attend regional workshops, and help lead the way during building emergencies.

Who You Are

  • A Natural Communicator: You enjoy talking with people of all ages and can explain library policies with tact and kindness.
  • A Problem Solver: You’re great at thinking on your feet, staying calm under pressure, and using professional judgment to help patrons and staff.
  • Tech-Savvy: You’re comfortable troubleshooting PCs and have a deep interest in library software and systems.
  • Detail-Oriented: You take pride in accuracy, whether you're compiling monthly statistics for the Board or managing staff schedules.
  • Physically Active: You're comfortable being on your feet, bending, reaching, and moving fully loaded book carts.

Your Experience & Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Library & Service Background: At least 3 years of customer service experience, with a preference for 2 of those years spent at a public library circulation desk.
  • Leadership: You have at least 2 years of experience supervising a team.
  • Flexibility: You have reliable transportation and are happy to work a schedule that includes some evenings and weekends.
  • Optimism: Don’t worry if you don’t meet every single qualification, we’d still like to hear from you.

This position includes a generous benefit program including health insurance, IMRF retirement, and paid holiday, vacation, and sick time. To apply, please include a cover letter, resume and three references.
